Back-to-School Reminders

Boy going to schoolThe start of the 2017-18 school year is a month away! Kindergartners through seventh graders will start school on Thursday, August 24; Students in grades 8 through 12 will start school on Friday, August 25.

Below are a few important reminders to ensure your child(ren) has a smooth start to the new year.

School Registration

School registration for students in grades 1-12 taking place online. Parents wishing to register previously-enrolled students in the district should log into their Infinite Campus parent portal to begin the process. School registration for 4-yr-old preschool, developmental kindergarten, and kindergarten will need to enroll as a new student here. Please register your student today if you have not already!

Don’t forget to pay your school fees via RevTrak. You can purchase activity tickets/passes, yearbooks, and many other items via the RevTrak site.

Transportation Registration

Any student who is eligible MUST register for bus transportation for the new school year. If you have questions regarding your child’s eligibility for school-provided transportation, please check their Infinite Campus account and look under the “JCSD Transportation” tab. Only those students registered for transportation will be allowed to ride the bus. The transportation registration forms are part of the online registration process. Transportation – Paid Ridership Option

Families with students in grades K through 9 living in the 1-mile walk zone and students in grades 10-12 living in the 2-mile walk zone may elect not to walk and instead, pay for their child(ren) to ride the bus. The Johnston Community School District and STA offer an optional pay-to-ride student transportation program.

Paid ridership is based on a space-available, or open-seats only, basis. This means that if there are seats available on a bus route, transportation will be provided for a fee of $250 per semester. The decision for offering any available seats will be done so using a distance rubric for families (i.e. furthest from school receive first consideration). Mandatory vaccinations for 7th and 12th graders

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), Bureau of Immunization, has completed the administrative rules process to require meningococcal vaccine for students enrolling in 7th and 12th grades.

The new requirement for enrollment in Iowa schools is a one-time dose of meningococcal vaccine  for ALL incoming seventh (7th) and twelfth (12th) grade students. Students in these grades will not be allowed to attend school until they have the vaccine and completed immunization form (provided by the doctor). A free back-to-school clinic on August 3 will provide these immunizations to students. The clinic will be held Thursday, August 3 from 2- 6 p.m. at Urbandale Middle School (7701 Aurora Ave, Urbandale).
