Hit the Water with these Fun Aquatic Programs
Aquatic programs include swim lessons, aquatic classes, life guard training, and the Blaze Swim Club.
Swim lessons are offered on a regular basis and always fill up quickly. Check this site, JCE social media, and The Connection newsletter for registration dates.
Lessons consist of eight 30-minute classes and may be offered for levels I through VI, intro to swim, and parent/tot. Click here to view descriptions of each level. Private lessons may also be available and consist of four 30-minute classes.
Tentative group swim lessons scheduled in August will not be offered, so registration on July 23 will not occur.
A handful of private lessons may be available. Please check Eleyo to see if there are any openings during August.
Aquatic classes range from diving lessons for teens to aqua aerobics for adults, and everything in between.
Life Guard Training
Life guard training is offered at least once a year, typically in the spring with a registration deadline in the winter. Class prerequisites include being 15 years of age, a continuous 300-yard swim, a timed swimming test while holding a 10 lb. brick, and treading water for two minutes using only your legs. The course will last at least 26 hours and result in certifications in life guarding, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (all good for two years). Certification requirements include attending all training sessions, demonstrating competency in all required skills, activities, and scenarios, and scoring at least 80 percent on the final written exam.
Johnston Blaze Swim Club
The Blaze Swim Club is a year round club with four sessions (Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer). Anyone can become a member if they have achieved level three of American Red Cross swim instruction and can swim 25 yards unassisted. Practices are divided into two ages groups – ages 10 and under and ages 11 and older – and focus on stroke development, turns, endurance conditioning, and meet fundamentals. Members will practice four times per week and have the opportunity to compete in local and USA swim meets.
Introduction to Competitive Swimming
This class gives potential Blaze members a change to test the waters before joining the club. The class typically last four weeks and is offered in the fall, winter, spring, and summer.
