On Tuesday, November 2, 2021, Iowans across the state will head to the polls to vote for the men and women who will govern the education of more than 483,000 students. Local communities elect school board member every other year for four-year terms.

In Johnston, three school board positions are open for election this year on November 2, 2021. The Iowa Association of School Boards urges the public to make education a priority by paying attention to local campaigns and voting on Nov. 2. Stay tuned for information on candidate forums closer to the November election date.

While there is no “ideal” board member profile, the Iowa Association of School Boards suggests voters look for these basic characteristics in candidates in order to elect effective board members.

  • They must have a laser-like focus on improving achievement for all students.
  • They act with professionalism and integrity when monitoring district finances.
  • They understand the board’s roles and responsibilities.
  • They work well as a member of a team.
  • They can commit the time and energy required to be effective.

School board members are elected to serve four-year terms, with elections taking place in odd-numbered years. Those elected receive no pay. Experienced school board members say the rewards of service lie in meeting the needs of children and communities.

Three seats currently held by Justin Allen, Dr. Jeanie Kerber, and Steven Hopper are up for election for the full four-year term. Other board members include Soneeta Mangra-Dutcher, Jennifer Chamberland, Dr. Alicia Clevenger, and Katie Fiala. The Johnston Community School District also has two student representatives for the board, who serve as liaisons between student life and the topics discussed by the board.
