Anthony Spurgetis Named JCSD Director of Human Resources
Johnston, Iowa – Following a month-long search process, Anthony Spurgetis has been selected as the new Director of Human Resources for the Johnston Community School District.
Spurgetis is no stranger to the world of K-12 human resources. He has spent his career working for some of Iowa’s largest school districts, including Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, and Marshalltown.
Spurgetis earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from the University of Iowa and a master’s degree in Human Resources and Employment Relations from The Pennsylvania State University. He also holds certifications as a Professional in Human Resources (PHR) from the HR Certification Institute and SHRM-CP from the Society for Human Resource Management.
In his role, Spurgetis will oversee the recruitment and hiring of all district personnel; handle implementation of the Danielson Framework and Evaluation process; assume responsibility for certifications, renewals, accreditation, and licensing; oversee mentor programs for new hires; and serve as Level 1 investigator for abuse and harassment issues. He fills the position held by Laura Kacer, who fulfilled the interim superintendent role and HR position during the 2018-19 school year before being named the permanent superintendent for 2019-20. His official start date will be July 1, 2019.
“Mr. Spurgetis brings with him a wealth of human resources knowledge and we look forward to having him as part of our administrative leadership team,” said JCSD Superintendent Laura Kacer. “Anthony has had a wide variety of school HR experiences which will serve the district well. Leadership is critical in attracting, hiring, and retaining competent and inspiring educators. We believe his strengths will complement the existing administrative positions and further build the cohesiveness of our team.”
The board is expected to approve the hire at the May 20 meeting.
