Thank you for visiting the Beaver Creek Elementary website. We are located at 8701 Lyndhurst Drive in Johnston, Iowa. Johnston is a growing suburban community northwest of Des Moines, Iowa. Beaver Creek is one of five elementary buildings in the Johnston Community School District, and will serve approximately 580 Kindergarten through fifth grade during the 2019-20 school year.
There are over seventy dedicated professionals on the staff at Beaver Creek. The teachers and staff members are committed to students and work hard to ensure every student makes growth during the school year. There are twenty-four Kindergarten through fifth grade homerooms at Beaver Creek, in addition to a full time school counselor, a full time teacher librarian, and a full time nurse. Every student at Beaver Creek goes to PE, Art, and Music classes every week. Our Extended Learning Program (ELP) serves our students requiring academic enrichment. Reading support personnel are on staff to assist our students with reading/literacy skills. Five different special education programs are available for students with unique learning needs, and there is a growing English to Speakers of Other Languages program to serve Beaver Creek students.
The school facility is a source of pride for the Beaver Creek community. 96,000 square feet learning space is available for students. Many teachers utilize collaborative classroom furniture, recognizing that learning is active. The facility includes two computer labs, two art studios, two music rooms, a full sized gymnasium, a separate lunchroom, and over thirty-five classrooms. Beaver Creek’s wireless networking capability has been enhanced, and fourth and fifth grade students are 1:1 with iPads. A remodeled entry and office area opened in the fall of 2016, providing a more secure entry to the school. The Johnston Community Education Department utilizes the school building with a before and after school care program called Kids-Teens Connection.
The Beaver Creek Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is second to none. The PTO raised funds and led volunteer efforts. Grants were awarded to teachers by the PTO last year, and the proceeds from the spring PTO spring fundraiser helped us additional collaborative furniture for our community areas. There are two great garden areas, both of which are supported by the PTO through volunteer support and funding. PTO members and parent volunteers enhance the learning environment and help make Beaver Creek Elementary a better place for students.
There are many ways to measure a school, and one is by standardized test scores. Beaver Creek historically scores high on reading and mathematics as measured by the Iowa Assessments. While we are pleased with the results, work is constantly being done to make sure every student grows every year and realizes his/her potential. The focus is on student learning and growth, not what students have been taught.
