Thank you for visiting the Beaver Creek Elementary web site. We are located at 8701 Lyndhurst Drive in Johnston, Iowa. Johnston is a growing suburban community northwest of Des Moines, Iowa. During the past twenty years, the Johnston Community School District has been growing an average of 200 new students every year. Beaver Creek is one of five elementary buildings in the Johnston Community School District. We have approximately 650 Kindergarten through fifth grade students enrolled in our school, along with another 100 preschool students.

There are over seventy dedicated professionals on the staff at Beaver Creek. Our teachers and staff members are committed to students and work hard to ensure every student makes growth during the school year. There are twenty-five Kindergarten through fifth grade homerooms at Beaver Creek. We have a full time school counselor, a full time teacher librarian, and a full time nurse. Every student at Beaver Creek goes to PE, Art, and Music classes every week. Our Extended Learning Program (ELP) serves our students requiring academic enrichment. We have reading support personnel to assist our students with reading/literacy skills. Four different special education programs are available for students with unique learning needs. An English as a Second Language teacher serves students learning English. I am privileged to begin my 15th year as the Beaver Creek principal.

Our school building is also a source of pride for the Beaver Creek community. We have 96,000 square feet of state of the art learning space available for our students. Many teachers now utilize collaborative classroom furniture, recognizing that learning is active. Our facility includes two computer labs, two art studios, two music rooms, a full sized gymnasium, a separate lunchroom, and over thirty-five classrooms. Beaver Creek’s wireless networking capability has been enhanced over the summer, and we now have over 320 iPads available for student use.  A remodeled entry and office area opened in the fall of 2016, providing a more secure entry to the school. The Johnston Community Education Department utilizes our facilities with a before and after school care program called Kids-Teens Connection.

The Beaver Creek Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is second to none. The PTO raised funds and led volunteer efforts. Grants were awarded to teachers by the PTO last year, and the proceeds from the spring PTO spring fundraiser helped us additional collaborative furniture for our community areas. We have two great garden areas, both of which are supported by the PTO through volunteer support and funding. PTO members and parent volunteers enhance our learning environment and help make Beaver Creek Elementary a better place for students.

There are many ways to measure a school, and one is by standardized test scores. Beaver Creek historically scores high on reading and mathematics as measured by the Iowa Assessments. While we are pleased with our results, we are constantly looking for ways to improve and make sure every student grows every year and realizes his/her potential. Our focus is on student learning and growth, not what students have been taught. We won’t be satisfied until all students learn and grow.

We welcome visitors and love to talk about Beaver Creek and the Johnston Community schools. Please call our office at (515) 278-6228 or send an email (etoot@johnston.k12.ia.us) with any questions or to arrange a visit.
