4-year-old Preschool Information

Registration Opens: February 12, 2024

The objective of our 4-year-old preschool program is to provide a quality education for children during the year(s) before entering kindergarten. To attend, children must be four years old by September 15, 2024 and do not need to live in the district. There are no fees to attend. Tuition is provided through the Iowa Statewide Voluntary Preschool Program.

All preschool programs have state licensed early childhood teachers. Maximum number of students for the 4-year-old program is 20 students with two teachers. The Johnston Preschool Curriculum is based on the Creative Curriculum for Preschool, early literacy concepts, Zaner Bloser writing and Everyday Math. Students are engaged in activities and learning opportunities to grow socially, emotionally, physically and cognitively in the early learning environment.

Developmental Kindergarten and Kindergarten Information

Registration Opens: February 12, 2024

We are proud to offer two kindergarten options for children.

Our Developmental Kindergarten (DK) program is offered in the morning or afternoon, and is designed for students old enough for kindergarten, but who may need an extra year of development before they are ready for all-day kindergarten. Skill development will focus on reading/literacy, math, and cognitive/social proficiency.

JCSD also offers all-day kindergarten at each of our five elementary schools. Students will master reading, writing, math, science, and related arts skills that serve as the foundation of their learning for years to come. Student-focused cognitive and social development is also a part of each day.

Developmental Kindergarten classes are first come, first serve. If your desired course is already full, add your child to the wait list.

*Scroll down to the purple bar to register. Child must be age 5 by September 15, 2024 to enroll for DK or kindergarten.
