JHS Comp Cheer Squad Wins Triton Challenge

2016 JHS Competition Cheer

The Johnston High School Competition Cheer Team heads to the state championships on November 5 in Des Moines.

The Johnston High School Varsity Competition Cheer Team took first place in the 4A Division and were named Grand Champions with the highest overall score at the 2016 Triton Challenge on Sunday, Oct. 30 at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge. Thirty competition cheer teams from throughout the state competed at the event.

The squad is composed of fifteen team members and alternates. Participants include:  Kati Anderson, Sarah Schade, Brooklyn Symber, Mryn Johnson, Ally Holtan, Ashton Nichols, Ashlee Gill, Baylee Roskamp, Carolyne Waldron, Ali Safris, Taylor Timmerman, Hope Ung, Haley Sharp, Karleen Derry, and Rylee Anderson.  The team is coached by Marcus Walker, Kate Safris and Alex Andre.

This is the second Grand Championship for the Dragons. They were also named Grand Champions at the University of Iowa Spirit Spectacular on Oct 16 in Iowa City. The team competes at the Iowa High School State Championships on November 5 at the Jacobson Building at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. Johnston took second place in class 4A at the 2015 State High School Championships.

The team will be hosting a State Showcase on Nov. 2 at 3:30 in the JHS Gym. The public is invited to come watch the routine and cheer on the team as they prepare for State this Saturday.
