Hennes Named All-Iowa Coach of the Year Finalist

The Des Moines Register has selected JHS teacher and cross country coach Patrick Hennes as one of three finalists for the All-Iowa Coach of the Year award. Hennes was named the Register’s All-Iowa Cross Country Coach for the 2016-17 season this past fall.

The Register’s Cody Goodwin wrote this about Hennes:

Hennes orchestrated the most prolific cross-country team performance in state history. Under his guidance, the Johnston girls’ cross country team won the Class 4A state championship by scoring 26 points, the best score in state history, as all five runners placed inside the top 15.

Under Hennes’ guidance, the Dragons meshed a combination of youthful talent and experienced leadership. At the state meet, junior Jessica McKee and freshman Brooke McKee paced the team by taking second and third, respectively. Senior Emily Poss took fifth while freshman Paige Horner and sophomore Josie Hovey rounded out the team finishes at seventh and 14th.

The All-Iowa high school coach of the year will be announced at The Des Moines Register Sports Awards on June 24. The winner is selected by the Register and Iowa City Press-Citizen high school sports staffs. Congratulations to Mr. Hennes on his nomination!
