JMS student Ali HashimOn Tuesday, August 29, Johnston Community School District officials learned Johnston Middle School eighth grader Ali Hashim died in a bike/vehicle accident.

The district will be providing school counselor services at Johnston Middle School for any student, staff member, parent, or community member in need of support surrounding his death. The middle school, located at 6501 NW 62nd, will be open from for counseling services all days this week, from 7:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. The district is encouraging parents to monitor their child’s social media activity, peer conversations, and behavior that may indicate they are struggling with the grieving process.

Community Mourns Loss after Tragic Accident

JOHNSTON, IOWA – On Tuesday, August 29, 2017, the Johnston Police Department responded a vehicular/bicycle accident in the 6600 block of Merle Hay Road, which resulted in the death of a young teenager.

“Our community mourns the loss of Ali Hashim, a Johnston resident and middle school student who had his life tragically taken too soon,” said Mayor Paula Dierenfeld. “On behalf of the City of Johnston, our deepest sympathies, thoughts and prayers go out to Ali’s friends, family and all those affected by his loss. We ask the community to provide comfort and support to Ali’s friends and family in the days and months ahead.”

A memorial fund has been established and contributions can be made to Ali Hashim Memorial Fund, Zion Lutheran Church, 4300 Beaver Drive, Des Moines, Iowa, 50310.

The accident remains under investigation and the Johnston Police Department continues to work in partnership with the Iowa State Patrol. We will provide updates when they come available.
