February 12 Commendations

It’s a Dragon Nation Out There!

Many of our student athletic/activity organizations are kicking their competitive spirits into high gear as seasons come to a close. Congratulations to all of our students in Dragon Nation on jobs well done over the weekend! If you have group or individual commendations, please send them to Laura Sprague, JCSD Director of Communications. The following commendations and photos were submitted by parents and/or coaches.

Johnston Show Choir

The Johnston Show Choirs competed at the Urbandale Show Choir Invitational this past weekend. Congratulations to the Johnston students, coaches, and parents on a fantastic showing!

  • JMS Sound Advice placed 5th in the Prep Division
  • JHS Synergy placed 1st in the Prep Division and also took home best band, best vocals, and best choreography
  • JHS Innovation won the Grand Championship and also earned best vocals and best band
  • Individuals Isaac Clark (Innovation) was named Best Male Vocalist; Amanda McGowen (Innovation) was named Best Female Vocalist, and Jordan Gould was named Best Instrumentalist (Innovation band member/drummer)
  • JMS Impact received a Superior rating and Best Vocals in the Middle School division
  • SMS Fusion received an Excellent rating in their first-ever competition in the Middle School division

JHS Speech and Debate

JHS students Kate and Prakhyath competed over the weekend and qualified to go to the National Speech & Debate Tournament. Congratulations!

Johnston Wrestling

The Johnston Wrestling team was named District Champions and has qualified as a team for the state tournament. Ten wrestlers have also qualified for individual spots at the state tournament. Class 3A competition will begin Wednesday, Feb. 14. Way to go!

Johnston Swimming

The Dragon Swim Team wrapped up their season at the state competition this past weekend in Iowa City. The team placed 9th overall, with individual top-ten finishes going to the following:

  • 200 IM: Scott Lair (3rd), Grant Lair (6th)
  • 100 Fly: Jaxon Kaster (10th)
  • 500 Free: Scott Lair (6th)
