The Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications (COMAP) is pleased to announce the results of the twenty-second Annual High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling (HiMCM). A total of 791 teams, with up to four students each, from 324 schools around the nation, competed. All teams worked at their own schools within the contest window of November 6-19, 2019. Each high school team chose from two modeling problems offered, and then constructed their solutions.

Johnston had two teams enter in the HiMCM. They analyzed available data and constructed algorithms to model the impact of plastic bottle bans in communities.

The team of Ada Chen (not pictured), Anna Larson, Phoebe Smith, and Jenna Woodsmall, and were awarded a “Successful Participant” certificate of achievement. The team of Matthew Ding , Anna Janni, Owen Smith, and Paxson Picken were awarded “Meritorious,” which means they qualified and will be competing in a more rigorous and prestigious international event.  Only 62 of 791 teams were chosen for this world-wide challenge.

The JHS Math Club is coached by Julie Probst. Congratulations to their students, coach, and supporters on this most recent achievement!
