JCSD Closures – Week of March 16

(Posted on Sunday, March 15 at 9:15 p.m.)

Tonight, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds announced a recommendation for all Iowa schools to close for four weeks in response to the growing number of COVID-19 cases in Iowa. This recommendation comes from guidance from the Iowa Department of Public Health and based on CDC guidelines. Tomorrow, she will hold a press conference that more clearly outlines school closure expectations, such as expected dates of closure and re-opening. We would encourage everyone to watch, if possible. At the time of this message, a time for the press conference had not yet been announced. The district will be sending out a follow-up message tomorrow (March 16) with information for all of you regarding school closures and other pertinent information.

In immediate response to today’s announcement, EFFECTIVE MONDAY, MARCH 16, all KTC childcare is cancelled; all Johnston Community Education classes are cancelled; all activity/athletic practices and gatherings are cancelled; any other type of district-affiliated staff or student gathering is cancelled.

We recognize this may change your plans and schedule, and for that, we apologize. However, we – as a district, as parents, as community members – all must do our part to slow the spread of COVID-19 and not inadvertently expose others. We will keep you updated as we find out more information that will help you plan for the coming weeks.
