Eight Johnston Schools Earn Prestigious “Apple Distinguished School” Awards

Johnston, IA – September 09, 2021 – Eight schools in the Johnston Community School District have been recognized as Apple Distinguished Schools for 2021-2024 for their integration of 1:1 iPad learning devices across PreK-12 classroom learning environments. Schools honored with this award include Johnston High School, Johnston Middle School, Summit Middle School, Beaver Creek Elementary, Horizon Elementary, Lawson Elementary, Timber Ridge Elementary, and Wallace Elementary.

Apple Distinguished Schools are centers of innovation, leadership, and educational excellence. They use Apple technology to connection students to the world, fuel creativity, deepen collaboration, and make learning personal.

“It is a tremendous honor to have eight of our schools recognized as Apple Distinguished Schools,” said Tony Sparks, JCSD Director of Technology. “It speaks to the creative and powerful ways our teachers infuse 1:1 learning in every subject, at every grade level. We are equipping Johnston learners with technology skills to carry them into the world beyond high school.”

The selection of Johnston High School, Johnston Middle School, Summit Middle School, Beaver Creek Elementary, Horizon Elementary, Lawson Elementary, Timber Ridge Elementary, and Wallace Elementary as Apple Distinguished Schools highlight the district’s success in creating an innovative and compelling learning environment that engages students and provides tangible evidence of academic achievement. The Johnston Community School District has had schools honored with this award in the past. Secondary schools Johnston High School, Johnston Middle School, Summit Middle School received the honor from 2018-2021. The 1:1 program originally started at Johnston High School in 2012 and the school received their first distinguished recognition from 2013-15.
