Developmental Kindergarten moves to Wallace in 2024-2025

20231027 110858JOHNSTON, Ia. (Feb. 9, 2024) — The Johnston Community School District is pleased to announce that our Developmental Kindergarten (DK) program will be moving to a new location within our district.

In fall 2024, the DK program will transition from Lawson Elementary to Wallace Elementary. This move is part of our ongoing efforts to optimize our resources and learning spaces within the district.

The district remains steadfast in our commitment to providing enriching and supportive experiences that foster the growth and development of each child. The new facility, just down the road at 6207 NW 62nd Ave. in Johnston, provides Developmental Kindergarten teachers the unique ability to partner with both the Johnston Early Learning Academy (JELA) and Wallace Elementary as students make these transitions.

Please refer to the transportation page of the JCSD website for the most up-to-date information on how this move will impact bussing for your student(s).

We understand that change can sometimes bring uncertainty, especially for our students and their families. Rest assured that we are working diligently to make this transition as seamless as possible. Our staff members are available to answer any questions or IMG 20230104 140947391 (1) address any concerns you may have during this time of transition.

At Johnston Community School District, we take great pride in our mission to commit all district resources to guide the learning of all students to graduate as confident learners with character, knowledge, and the skills to excel in any endeavor they choose. This relocation is just one example of our ongoing commitment to providing the highest quality education to all learners within our district.

Developmental Kindergarten (DK) is a program designed for students who would benefit from a bridge between preschool and kindergarten.  Students must be age 5 by September 15, to enroll in this program.  Some children, especially those with late spring and summer birthdays, need a little more time to develop academically, socially, and/or emotionally and would benefit from having an extra year before beginning a full day kindergarten program.

Registration for Developmental Kindergarten begins 8 a.m. Monday, Feb. 12 — the same time as registration for 4-year-olds and K-12 students. Click here to register. DK classes are first come, first serve.
