JOHNSTON, Ia. (June 12, 2025) — Brooke Hakert has been selected as assistant principal of Lawson Elementary for the 2025-2026 school year, pending board approval June 9.

She will step into the role previously held by Dr. Stephanie Ingle, who was recently named principal of Lawson. Hakert will start her new role July 1.

Hakert has worked in the Des Moines school district since 2011, most recently as the associate principal of Jackson Elementary School. She also served as a MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports) coordinator, a dean of students and instructional coach.

Hakert began her career in education as a third grade teacher and academic interventionist in the Pendergast school district in Phoenix, where she served for six years.

“I am inspired by Johnston’s focus on the development and genuine support of students, staff and families,” Hakert said. “I have a genuine passion for fostering both academic excellence and an inclusive school culture and I am honored to bring my leadership, experience and commitment to this position.”

In her new role, Hakert will assist the principal in providing leadership and supervision of Lawson Elementary, promoting the educational development and achievement of students. She will provide leadership and direction to staff, assist in ensuring district and board procedures are met, assist with instructional program implementation, assist with financial and budgetary affairs, and promote a school environment that is safe and conducive to all students.

“Brooke brings to Johnston 14 years of experience in educational leadership, along with a passion for fostering academic excellence and an inclusive school culture,” Superintendent Dr. Nikki Roorda said. “Her leadership style, focus on building strong relationships, and emphasis on fostering a collaborative school environment make her a great fit for this role.”

Hakert received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Central College, master’s degree in education with principal certification from Grand Canyon University, and reading specialist endorsement from Northern Arizona University. Her selection will go before the Johnston Board of Education on June 9.
