Congratulations to 9th Grade band member Paige Thacker (French horn) on her selection to the All State Band!  Selection to an All State ensemble is considered the highest honor a high school musician can achieve in the state of Iowa!  It is a profound accomplishment at any age, but is particularly impressive when achieved by a 9th grader, as the pool of auditionees includes students in grades 9 – 12.  Paige will join 15 other JHS band students who were selected for All State ensembles for the All State Music Festival in Ames, IA in November.

Repeat Announcements:

Off-season weightlifting attendance starts today for all 8th grade football players that are not out for wrestling.  If you have not filled out the Google form sent by Coach Griffin, that needs to be done ASAP.

SCHOOL PERMIT MEETING: Attention 9th Grade Students! Our next School Permit Meeting will be Tuesday, November 5 at 3:15 PM in the Cafeteria of Johnston Middle School (enter through front entrance). The ONLY students eligible are 9th grade students who HAVE HAD THEIR LEARNERS’ PERMIT FOR AT LEAST 6 MONTHS AND HAVE COMPLETED DRIVER’S ED. THE STUDENT AND A PARENT MUST ATTEND THE MEETING! Please bring your completed Driver’s Education Certificate (if you have a paper version – if you do not have a paper version don’t worry about it) and learner’s permit to the meeting. Parking Tags will be available for $20 during the meeting. Students will need a parking tag to park on school grounds during the school year. Please make sure you have your license plate number with you at the time of purchase. If you have NOT completed Driver’s Ed by the meeting date, we will have another meeting next month. Be watching your announcements for the date and time!

JMS: Annual Winter Warmth Drive!

Bring in your gently used and/or new coats, mittens, hats, snow pants, boots, blankets, scarfs, or other items to keep kiddos safe and warm this winter.

Put all items into your A DAY LUNCH BIN. The bins are all labeled and placed throughout the building. If you have trouble finding your lunch’s bin, donations can also be brought to Ms. Comstock or Mrs. Anderson; just make sure to label items with your name and lunch period.

The lunch with the most donation items wins a hot chocolate bar during their lunch period. May the best lunch win!

Calling all artists! You are invited to submit original artwork to a contest to choose the cover for this year’s JMS Yearbook. The yearbook theme is 2020 Vision. The contest winner’s work will appear on the front cover and wrap around on the back cover, so size accordingly. Entries are due by October 31 and will be judged based on creative interpretation of the theme, originality, and expression of JMS spirit and pride. Use any 2-dimensional media (drawing, painting, collage, etc.). Entries not selected for the cover may be included inside the book to showcase student creativity. Questions? Ask Ms. Kehrli, Mr. Kirkholm, or Ms. James.

9th grade students: Are you new to Mock Trial at the High School level? Informational meetings for grades 9-12 Mock Trial will be held on Monday, October 28th from 3:00-3:30 PM in room 412, Ms. McConnell’s room, at JMS OR Thursday, October 31st at 7:00 PM in room 412, Ms. McConnell’s room. Each meeting will last approximately 30 minutes.

Attending a Mock Trial meeting is required for any student who HAS NOT participated in High School Mock Trial. These are for both students and parents when possible. If you are unable to attend either one of the meetings, you must contact Ms. McConnell (molly.mcconnell@johnston.k12.ia.us) to discuss your participation by November 1.
