What is a GSA?

Gay-Straight Alliances or Gender-Sexuality Alliances (GSAs) are confidential, student-run clubs or groups in schools that serve as a safe space for all students, regardless of their orientation or gender identity/expression. GSAs provide a place for students for students to meet, support, and listen to each other about their experiences, talk about issues related to orientation and gender identity/expression, and work to end homophobia and transphobia in their school.

This past weekend, the Dragon Girls Swimming Team traveled to Marshalltown to compete in the STATE meet competition.  This season, we had a young team, including freshman Olivia Frantum, and Olivia Swalley.

In the Friday evening prelims, Olivia Frantum had a strong swim going 2:13.08 to pickup an 18th place finish.  Olivia Swalley also went a lifetime best time of 2:05.41 to qualify for Saturday evening championship final heat.  She continued to improve and went 2:05.49 for a 4th place podium finish.

In the 500 Freestyle, Olivia Frantum went a 5:13.00 which qualified her for the finals on Saturday.  She swam strong, and dropped to a 5:09.37 to achieve an 11th place overall finish. This was a season best time.

In the 100 breaststroke, Olivia Swalley went 1:05.82 in prelims, and followed with a 1:05.52 in finals for another podium finish in 6th.  These were both lifetime best swims.

On Saturday, both Frantum and Swalley were also part of our relay teams.

In the 200 Medley Relay, the team of Abby Rastetter, Olivia Swalley, Izzy Osborne and Kassady Taylor had great swims, and went 1:49.34 for a 10th place overall finish.

In the 200 free relay, the team of Olivia Swalley, Keira Du, Kassady Taylor and Olivia Frantum went a season best time of 1:42.29 for a 20th place overall finish.

In the 400 free relay, the team of Abby Rastetter, Brooklynn Kaster, Olivia Frantum and Izzy Osborne all had season best swims for a 3 second time drop to move into the 12th place finish.

Overall, the team earned 99 points for a 9th place STATE meet finish.

The coaches are all so proud of the success this team has been able to achieve not only at the STATE meet, but throughout the season.  We congratulate everyone on another successful season, and are already looking towards the depth that next year’s freshman will add to the team. 2019 State Meet Final Results
