CONGRATULATIONS TO JOHNSTON MOCK TRIAL: Johnston had a great day at the regional mock trial competition on November 9th! 32 teams from the Des Moines are competed for 8 bids to the state tournament. Johnston’s team Purple received the highest score today, giving them an automatic bid to the state tournament. The other 3 Johnston teams (Gold, Dragon, Firestorm) have qualified for the playoffs and will compete again November 11th to determine the rest of the state competitors. Go Drags!
ATTENTION D&D CLUB: Due to interest, any who wish may come to Mr. Hewitt’s room (113). We will meet from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
8TH GRADE SCIENCE BOWL: If you are interested in science and competition, reach out to Ms. Herbert about Science Bowl! It is a question-and-answer format that tests student’s knowledge in a range of science disciplines including Life Science, Physical Science, Earth and Space Science, Energy, Mathematics and General Science. We need a team by December 4th and the event is on February 18th. Email email@example.com with any questions or stop by room 128!
DO YOU WANT TO SEE YOUR TEACHER IN A TURKEY COSTUME!!! Bring a canned good or money to donate to the Johnston Partnership. For every $5 or 5 items a teacher receives they will get a “feather” added to their photo. The teacher with the most “feathers” gets to wear the costume OR have a pie in their face during lunches. Donations can also be dropped off in Ms. Comstock’s Room #123. Check the progress of the teachers outside the cafeteria on the bulletin board.
FCCLA: There will be an FCCLA meeting Thursday, November 17 at 3pm in Ms. Comstock’s Room. We will be discussing activities for December.
MATHCOUNTS: Math Counts will meet next on Friday, November 18th from 3:00-4:00pm in Room 101.
JMS FALL PLAY: JMS Fall Play, “Murder at Aunt Agatha’s” coming to you live this Saturday, Nov. 12! See the show at 2:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. Tickets, $3 for anyone over 5 years old.
It’s 1985, and dear old Aunt Agatha has finally passed on, leaving a mismatched group of relatives vying for her fortune. When bodies start piling up, suspicion rests on everyone – the failing movie star, the hillbilly cousins, the jailbird nephew and more. Good thing Detective Sam Club is on the case in this comedy with a bit of mystery thrown in.
CAFETERIA CHANGE: To be in line with cafeteria procedures at JHS, JMS will no longer be allowing bags or coats in the serving area at breakfast and lunch. Please have your valuables on you when you go through the line and leave your bags and coats at your table. This will be effective starting Monday, November 7.

SCHOOL DRIVER’S PERMIT:
** 9th grade students who wish to obtain a school driver’s permit can follow the following link: https://www.johnstoncsd.org/school-news/school-drivers-permit-process/
This link will guide them to a Google Site. Students will need to log in with their jdragonmail credentials in order to watch a video and complete a quiz. The video contains the information that was presented at permit meetings in the past and will now take the place of those meetings. One parent will need to watch the video and note that completion on the quiz. As usual, the only students eligible are 9th graders who have completed driver’s education and have had their learner’s permit for at least six months. After the quiz has been completed, students can pick up their signed Department of Transportation form in the JMS Front Office. Students will need a parking tag to park on school grounds during the school year. Parking tags are available for $20 when students pick up their DOT form. Please make sure you have your license plate number with you at the time of purchase.
