Attention 9th Graders: Join Academic Decathlon! Acdec Overview 21 22

What is Academic Decathlon?  A contest where you take 7 bubble tests about 7 separate subjects, give a speech and get interviewed.

It’s fun –  Really!

Academic Decathlon is a team activity, but more of an individual competition.  There are 10 categories each student is tested on:  Art History, Economics, Essay, Interview, Language and Literature, Math, Music History, Science, Social Science and Speech.

Why do it?   Because it’s awesome.   Also, you’ll meet new people.   Students are not required to prepare heavily for the Regional, but any student going to the state competition is expected to study hard.  The Honors category especially is very competitive.  We want to continue our stellar tradition

Want to Join? The first AcDec meetings are September 20th and 21st from 3:00-3:15pm in room 426 at JHS. There will be cookies!

Questions? Contact Mrs. Cline scline@jdragonmail.us

Reminder: Masks are Mandatory on Buses

At the beginning of the 2021-22 school year, there had been conflicting state and federal guidance on how the CDC mask order applied to school buses. With a federal judge’s ruling in a larger case on Sept. 13, 2021, it is now clear that masks must be worn by students and transportation personnel while on the bus.

Moving forward, masks will be required when students are on school buses, beginning Monday, Sept. 20, 2021. There will be progressive disciplinary measures, similar to last year, for bus riders who do not comply with the mask mandate. If this change in our practice causes your family to alter your mode of transportation to/from school, please notify our transportation department at 515-278-8149 and your child(ren) school so we can update our transportation routes.

If your child(ren) qualify for a medical or religious mask exemption, you can access, print, and return the form found here: https://www.johnstoncsd.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Certification-Form-for-Exemption-from-Facial-Covering-Requirements-Johnston-CSD-01941237x7F7E1.pdf

9th grade students who wish to obtain a school driver’s permit can follow the following link: https://www.johnstoncsd.org/school-news/school-drivers-permit-process/

This link will guide them to a Google Site. Students will need to log in with their jdragonmail credentials in order to watch a video and complete a quiz. The video contains the information that was presented at permit meetings in the past and will now take the place of those meetings. One parent will need to watch the video and note that completion on the quiz. As usual, the only students eligible are 9th graders who have completed driver’s education and have had their learner’s permit for at least six months. After the quiz has been completed, students can pick up their signed Department of Transportation form in the JMS Front Office. Students will need a parking tag to park on school grounds during the school year. Parking tags are available for $20 when students pick up their DOT form. Please make sure you have your license plate number with you at the time of purchase.
