Announcements for Thursday, September 29, 2022 

Teachers will update weekly assignments every Sunday so students know what needs to be done the following week. In the weekly updates, teachers will communicate any due dates for student work.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

MENS GOLF: On September 26, V placed 1st of 9 at Willow Creek Golf Course, 18 holes, in Inaugural Conference Meet with a 281.  Low Dragons- Andrew Johannsen 67 (Conference Champ), Ben Christy 70 (3rd), Krishiv Gupta 72 (5th), and Owen Howe 72 (7th).  Also playing were Tyler Herrmann 77 (30th), and Nate Freidhoff 78 (35th).  1st Team All Conference.- Andrew Johannsen Champion, Ben Christy 3rd Place, Krishiv Gupta 5th Place, Owen Howe 7th Place.  With Johannsen’s Ind. Championship, Dragons have had the individual champion for 3 years running (Calen Bishop ‘20, ‘21). Dragons also won the Conference Meet in ’21.

On September 26, some of our JV competed at American Legion Golf Course, 9 holes, Marshalltown JV Invite.  Low Dragons- Emmett Johnson 45, Sam Hesselmann 47, Owen Ellsworth/Alex Williamson 48.


 

REPEAT ANNOUNCEMENTS:

ATTENTION 8TH GRADE ACTIVITY PASS HOLDERS: If you are an 8th grader and purchased an Activity Pass, there was an error in the printing.  PLEASE BRING YOUR CURRENT ACTIVITY PASS TO THE COUNSELING OFFICE BEFORE FRIDAY to swap out for the new & improved version. You can do this between the hours of 7:30 am – 2:00 pm.


 

SISTERS 4 SUCCESS: We are looking for 8th and 9th grade female students of color to participate in a leadership group entitled “Sisters 4 Success (S4S).”  Our next meeting is Thursday, September 29th during 8th hour in the auditorium. The purpose of the group is to establish a system of support to help develop personal, social and academic skills of minority female students in the Johnston Public Schools.  Each participating member will be expected to play an active role in setting up chapter expectations, goals, and objectives for their S4S chapter.  These goals and objectives will be centered on the following initiatives:

– Academic Development – Financial Awareness

– Community Connections – Social Development

– Personal Development – Human Relations


 

DIG PINK/SPIKE BLUE: Now that Homecoming Week is over, it’s time to look ahead.  The week of Oct. 10 we are doing a combined cancer awareness week with volleyball, cheerleading and football.  Our focus will be on stage IV breast cancer through the Side-Out Foundation and colon cancer through the American Cancer Society.  On Tuesday, Oct. 11 we will be hosting SE Polk for our senior night and our annual Dig Pink/Spike Blue match.  On Friday, Oct. 14, the cheerleaders have identified as a pink out night at your senior night football vs. CR Kennedy.  As a way to come together as a community and also raise funds for these causes, we are selling t-shirts to be worn to both the volleyball match on Tuesday and the football game on Friday.  There are 3 choices, so we hope you can find one you can choose.  Here is the link to place an order:  https://johnstonpinkout2022.itemorder.com/shop/home/

This order will need to be placed by midnight this Thursday, Sept. 29 in order to get the shirts back in time.  As usual, we will be having a host of door prizes for those in attendance at the volleyball match on Tuesday along with a bake sale and silent auction.  In addition, we will be having a silent auction for two parking spaces for students outside door #2 and we will be having a raffle that will conclude after the 3rd quarter of the football game on Friday night.


 

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD: Students interested in joining Science Olympiad there will be a meeting Thursday September 29th right after school in room 122.  If you are interested and can’t make the meeting please contact Mr. Kleve at bkleve@johnston.k12.ia.us to get more information about joining.

GAME GROUP:  Beginning on Monday, September 19th there will be the option of “Game Group” in the counseling office during lunch time. Students are able to grab their lunch on a styrofoam plate and come up to the counseling office to eat and play a board or card game with other students that share the same lunch. If you are interested in this, please let Mrs. Fitzgerald know via email and she will add you to the list to remind on Monday morning. Her email is carlie.fitzgerald@johnston.k12.ia.us.


 

GSA:  Students that are interested in joining the JMS Gay Straight Alliance should let Mrs. Lunn or Mrs. Overton know so that you will begin to receive emails about upcoming meetings. If you filled out the clubs & activities survey in Pride a couple weeks ago and selected GSA you are already on the list. We plan to have our first meeting in the next couple of weeks! Attention any 9th grade boy interested in playing basketball this year. We will have open gym from 6-7:30am in the large gym on the dates below. If you plan on playing this year, we encourage you to attend.

STEM: Any 9th grade girl interested in attending Go Further Girls Stem Conference for women interested in STEM fields and careers there is a field trip with limited space on November 1st.  Cost of the field trip is $25 and only have 25 spots for 9th grade.  Trip would leave JMS around 8:00 am and be back in time to make your bus home.  Stop in and see Mr. Kleve in room 122 if you are interested.


 

STUDENT ACTIVITY TICKETS: If you purchased an activity pass for the 22-23 school year, they will be available for pick up in the Counseling Office until 2pm.


 

JMS WEIGHTLIFTING:

Weightlifting Hours of Operation:

9th Grade Students ONLY – 6:30-7:30am -Monday, Wednesday, Friday

  • Locker rooms will be available in the morning for students to shower, change, etc.

8th & 9th Grade Students – 3:00-4:00pm – Monday, Tuesday, Thursday

  • No locker rooms will be open after school. Students will change in the restroom located across from the weight room.

Location:  JMS Weight Room – Closest Entrance is Door 15

SCHOOL DRIVER’S PERMIT:

** 9th grade students who wish to obtain a school driver’s permit can follow the following link: https://www.johnstoncsd.org/school-news/school-drivers-permit-process/

This link will guide them to a Google Site. Students will need to log in with their jdragonmail credentials in order to watch a video and complete a quiz. The video contains the information that was presented at permit meetings in the past and will now take the place of those meetings. One parent will need to watch the video and note that completion on the quiz. As usual, the only students eligible are 9th graders who have completed driver’s education and have had their learner’s permit for at least six months. After the quiz has been completed, students can pick up their signed Department of Transportation form in the JMS Front Office. Students will need a parking tag to park on school grounds during the school year. Parking tags are available for $20 when students pick up their DOT form. Please make sure you have your license plate number with you at the time of purchase.

ATTENTION SCHOOL PERMIT DRIVERS: We want to keep you safe and legal. REMEMBER YOU CAN ONLY DRIVE TO SCHOOL–you should not be driving to any other location with this permit! Please review the laws/expectations of your School Permit.

USAGE: When can I use my School Permit?

·  Only within the school boundaries

·  To school or school sponsored event

LOCATIONS:  ** Where do I go with my School Permit? **

·  Travel the direct route (App.)

·  Gas stations should be on or nearest to the route

TRANSPORTING OTHERS:  Can anyone else ride with me?

·  One passenger other than siblings

·  This does not change the direct route expectation, passengers must start and stop at your locations

VIOLATIONS:  What will happen to me if I don’t obey the law?

·  Examples of Law Enforcement Consequences

·  Loss of privileges (Ex: 2 or more Moving Violations = Revoked for 1 year)

·  Monetary (Ex: $195 for Speeding Violation)

·  Prolonged time for license

·  School Consequences

·  Typically: Warning, Alternative parking sight, Loss of privilege

PARKING: Where can I park while I’m at school?

·  Back Lot – North side of JMS (Enter Door 15)

·  Must have purchased a parking tag ($20) in the JMS Front Office

·  Use only non “staff parking” spots
