MONDAY-NO SCHOOL, MAY 26TH
TUESDAY-A DAY
Middle School Mock Trial7th & 8th grades |
What is Mock Trial? Mock trial is a competition-based introduction to the legal system which offers students an opportunity for personal growth and achievement, emphasizing the importance of research, presentation and teamwork.
What do you do in a Mock Trial? Students will develop a case to present in simulated court with the help of high school and attorney coaches. Cases alternate between civil and criminal cases. The 2024-2025 case will be a civil case.
What type of roles are there? Roles include attorneys, witnesses, timers, and alternates. Each team will also have two understudies. Roles will be determined by a selection process in the fall.
Who can participate in Mock Trial? Any 7th or 8th grader (school year 2025-26)
How many students can participate in Mock Trial? Johnston sponsors 4 Middle School teams. Each team will be composed of 12 students, two of which will be understudies.
What happens if more than 48 students want to participate? We will use a selection process to determine who will be on the teams.
What is the time commitment for this activity?
- All Mockers will have TWO required practices each week:
- All teams–Tuesday nights–6:30-8:00pm at JMS.
If you are unable to attend Tuesday night practices, you will not be able to participate in Mock Trial.
- Individual team practices ~3 hours for single team meetings (often occurs on weekend afternoons or evenings, and is determined by group consensus).
All 7th graders and 8th-grade new to Mock Trial students may have an ADDITIONAL ONE-HOUR practice each week to learn the basics (ie. how each role affects the case, development of parts, objections/case theory).
