How are students identified as needing special education services?
If you suspect your child may have a disability that affects their learning, behavior, communication, or physical abilities, it’s important to take action early. Start by reaching out to your child’s teacher, school counselor, or principal to share your concerns and request an evaluation. Under federal law (the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, or IDEA), parents have the right to request a formal assessment to determine if their child qualifies for special education services.
The school will review existing data, gather input from educators and parents, and, with your consent, conduct evaluations in the areas of concern, this evaluation can take up to 60 days. If eligible, your child may receive an Individualized Education Program (IEP) tailored to meet their unique needs. Open communication and collaboration with your child’s school team are key steps in ensuring the right supports are in place to help your child succeed.
