Behavioral Services1Helping Students Achieve Success Through Proactive Measures

JCSD offers a wide range of services to assist with increasing appropriate and decreasing inappropriate behavior among our students. We take a positive proactive approach to teaching students the behaviors that will allow them to be successful in school.

All five elementary schools and Summit Middle School have implemented the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). PBIS is based on principles of applied behavior analysis and the prevention approach and values of positive behavior support. PBIS is a prevention-oriented way for school personnel to (a) organize evidence-based practices, (b) improve their implementation of those practices, and (c) maximize academic and social behavior outcomes for students. PBIS supports the success of ALL students.

Behavior Intervention Plans and Individualized Education Plans

Behavior intervention Plans are sometimes developed for students who require a more personalized approach. Parents are an integral part in developing that BIP. Other team members may include outside therapists, extended family, and Area Education Agency staff. BIPs can be written for students in general education as well as those in special education.

JCSD attempts to educate students in their neighborhood schools whenever possible. Sometimes a specialized approach is necessary and a special education student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) Team may determine that placement in one of the district’s BEST programs is necessary. The BEST (Behavior Emotional And Social Skills Training) program provides a small group setting with highly skilled staff to assist with implementing high level behavior plans and in depth social skills training.
